Fractional silver?

I found a fellow on another forum offering one gram silver ingots for a buck apiece. They're cute, but I haven't bought any. What surprised me was that several others seem to be interested in collecting sub-ounce silver.

Any sub-ounce collectors here? What do you think of $31/oz for silver doodads?

SLV>GLD 12-31-2008 11:51 AM

Re: Fractional silver?

I got a 1 gram "ingot" out of my dealer's sterling bin although the piece is clearly marked .999, I got it for the novelty and the fact that it was under spot even for such a small fraction. I'd never bother with something that small otherwise. 1g of .999 silver is about 1/4 the size of a postage stamp.

Re: Fractional silver?

IMO at that point you're better off accumulating pre-65 junk. Much better liquidity, I'd imagine.

Heimdhal 12-31-2008 11:56 AM

Re: Fractional silver?

ive seen 1/10th ounce silver coins ONCE, and they were going for 2 bucks or so a piece.

I wouldnt mind having one or two little small doodads just for a talking point or what not, but I cant see going seriously into them for anything other than that.

Re: Fractional silver?

I agree with born crossed eyed. I have a few hundred face value of junk silver for the WTSHTF scenario.

I'd like to see 1 ounce rounds or bars with little break lines like 0.25 or 0.20 or 0.10....

I have a few silver bars that have a break line at 1/2 oz.....kind of neat....it is just a feature in the die that causes the bar to be very thin at the break line....i think you could fracture it by bending along that line with just your hands.....each half is marked 1/2 ounce.....but connected together to make a full ounce.

I thought that was what 90% pre 65 us coinage was.

I have four 1/4 ounce Engelhard Prospectors, I have seen 1/10th ounce Prospectors before.

I pick off the 1/2 oz engelhard apmex and sunshine rounds on ebay when I can, but a lot of the time they get bidded up to stupid levels!

I've got 15 of the rounds like you are talking about that break into two 1/4 oz and one 1/2 oz. and I have 11 of the rounds that break into four 1/4 oz. I would sell them for $15 each if anyone is interested.

Re: Fractional silver?

I have a few 5 and 10 gram bars. Picked them up for substantially below spot(tag sale) . Neat novelty, but I wouldn't pay a premium for them.

Re: Fractional silver?

A couple fractional silver bars or a few 90% dimes = chump change = not significant...means get what you like and enjoy 'em.

I would pick some up for a fun addition to the stack.

Is there a link?

Re: Fractional silver?

Fractional .999 is OK, I wouldn't be too interested in anything below 5 grams. Just for curiosity, I picked up a 5 gram JM ingot once, also have a couple of the 1/2 oz AMPEX rounds. The premium is too high on the 1/2 oz Prospectors (or smaller) and similar items, but I wouldn't mind having a couple, just as collector's items.

If silver keeps running up like it is today, fractionals will be made just like gold!!!!!!

I have some fractional silver kruggerands (sp?) about the size of a nickel, maybe a dime...I forget. I'll take some pictures in a few days when I get home and post them for your enjoyment.

Re: Fractional silver?

The Lasqueti Mint has a 1/10 oz Ag coin. I picked up one before Christmas for $10 Canadian to add to my collection.

The picture is about a third of the way down on this website:

http://chiefacoins.com/Database/Micr...eti-Island.htm

(sorry, I still haven't figured out how to attach pictures)

The Mint also have some 1/2 oz Ag coins (I'm looking at getting the raven. The eye on it is so lifelike). The prices are kind of high as it is a small mint with low mintages.

Anyone know how much a JM 5g bar can fetch on ebay?

Professur 01-15-2009 04:14 PM

Re: Fractional silver?

As much as a 1oz bar if you write the 5G really big. For some reason, the larger you write it, the less people see it.

Seriously, if you set the openning bed at $10, someone will take it.

Re: Fractional silver?

It also helps to add roughly a page and a half of blather about the current times and how metal protects you from everything except nuclear holocaust and even then silver cures disease and blocks gamma rays when stacked deep enough. :)

Here is an example of a 10 gram art silver bar 999:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/999-PURE-SILVER-C...742.m153.l1262

I came across this guy's ebay store when I was searching copper awhile back. He always has such interesting bullion pieces and seems to be in my area, but I have never found a physical storefront yet. He seems to do well on his product ( gets a good premium). I've never contacted him through ebay as I really don't want anything to do with ebay.

Re: Fractional silver?

Alright, I have a confession to make. While shopping on APMEX on lunch today I noticed before checkout, 3 JM 5gm AG bars w/ S#s. The premium was ridiculous!! However, after removing them 3 times from my cart, I eventually split the difference (sort of). I added 2 to my order and left the other 1 for a fellow GIM'er to snag.

From my understanding they are not made any more by JM. I had never really heard much about fractional silver bars, so, I figured as a novelty, why not? I read a bit and found out that fractional bars were made due to the AG price spike in the 80's when it reached $50 an oz! I think it might say something about it in the video I posted as well. Needless to say the last one was gone 10 minutes later, along with the rest of the JM 1's.

Nor have I!!! I knew I had to grab them and I will be pissed if someone other than a GIM'er got the last one I left behind. They were (drumroll please) 12.99 OUCH! But the cazy part is they will probably sell for more than a JM oz. (if I can part with them) which they had about 5 of for 10 minutes today. Left a pair of those behind as well. Hope someone comes forward.

oh and as spot rose and fell today that price stayed solid...
It was me or someone else, I pulled the trigger first, left one to tell the tale...

I picked up some of the APMEX 1/2 oz a while back. Premium was kind of high, so I only bought a few.

I have a few other Lasqueti fractional silvers that I'll post in the future

I also just picked up a EXPO 86 1'2 oz silver bar minted by SANDO precious metals for the Expo in Vancouver BC in 1986.

I'll try to get a good photo of it to post here.

OK, those of you who are still interested in Fractional Silver,
here are the pics. These are the JM 5's compared to a JM 1oz.
They are big and flat larger than an AG Credit suisse 5g. not as thick.

I scored these beauts off APMEX, never seen them there before. Guess someone must have raided Grandpa's stash!

Has anyone picked up the 1/2 oz silver round fracs from APMEX yet?

Rip-off but I may add 1 or two to next order, for fun!
The funny part here is I have seen AG Fracs sell for almost the same as oz's, and mind you 5 gram bars, not 1/2oz rounds!

In my roll of mixed ounce coins, I got an odd man out. This is the only coin that wasn't stamped with purity (although it rings true). It had a Deep X across the coin on both sides. It was part of the die, it wasn't etched on later. It seems like it is there for you to use tin snips to turn it into quarter ounce pieces.

seem to command a greater relative premium than ounces!

I have both of these items. One day hopefully, these 1/2 oz APMEX rounds may come in very handy and they are nice looking! My daughter likes them as well.

AGRO, those 5 gm JM bars are very cool, I wish I had bought a few more, they would make a nice looking and unique necklace for that special someone, or just for gifts.
